Chelsio Newsletter, August 2016

A lot of exciting things have been going on at Chelsio recently.....

Chelsio released drivers for Server 2016. This comprehensive offering includes SMB-Direct, Storage Spaces Direct (S2D), Nano Server, Storage Replica, Network Direct, iSCSI Offloaded initiator, Packet Direct, VxLAN, NVGRE, and SRIOV offload support. Chelsio has also released support for Windows 10 for Client RDMA.

Chelsio announced its next generation Terminator silicon, T6.
  • Supports 1/10/25/40/50/100 GbE
  • Integrated encryption support, either in co-processor or inline mode
  • Runs T5 software AS-IS, preserving the existing software investment
  • PCI Gen3 x 16
T6 can encrypt/decrypt data with or without the integrated TOE, enabling a variety of applications such as de-dupe finger print generation, concurrent data-at-rest encryption and network encryption using a single chip. When combined with the integrated traffic manager, T6 is ideally suited for secure media streaming applications. Why have a regular cloud or datacenter if you can have a secure one at no power or price premium? T6 enables differentiation of the end solution.

Chelsio further introduced inbox’ed support for NVMe Fabrics and is part of the first official release of the NVMe Express distribution. Chelsio and Samsung collaborated to demonstrate 1M IOPs and ~12usec latency for remote access at the Flash Memory Summit In Santa Clara.

Chelsio and Microsoft collaborated to demonstrate 5M IOPs for S2D. This establishes the redline performance in cloud storage offering with Windows platforms. Intel endorses Chelsio iWARP as the preferred plug and play solution to use with Windows Server 2016 S2D among the various RDMA alternatives and published a blog on high IOPS performance achieved with Chelsio iWARP RDMA capable adapters and S2D.

Chelsio demonstrated 5M IOPs iSCSI performance. This establishes iSCSI as the protocol of choice for high performance SAN applications – leveraging the existing ecosystem and software peers.

Chelsio released support for inbox’ed iSER protocol on Linux, providing yet another option for an Ethernet SAN protocol.

Chelsio joined ARM community as a partner.

New Products
  • Chelsio released updated DPDK Package with filtering support.

Recent Publications
Chelsio added a number of News reports and white papers to its technical library, including:
  • Cheliso published a paper describing the fourth incarnation of RoCE protocol and the actual deployment challenges associated with it.

  • Chelsio published a report on NVMe over 40 GbE iWARP. The results show 1.2M IOPS, line rate throughput, and ~12 microseconds incremental latency for accessing remote devices.

  • Chelsio published a quick start guide to configure the Chelsio NVMe Fabrics solution with ease in under 20 minutes with any legacy switch with no special settings or uniform switch requirements in the extended datacenter.

  • Chelsio published a report on 40GbE iSCSI. The results show 5M IOPs and line rate bandwidth. Chelsio iSCSI is the only iSCSI implementation in the industry that has not changed and been in production for a decade and which has scaled to 100Gb, and thus is ideally suited for Flash applications. It can use software peers and has a built-in second source for enterprise customers in the form of a software stack. It allows the customer to immediately drive towards revenues while preserving the option of transition to any of the other emerging SAN standards via a software upgrade to existing hardware.

  • Chelsio published a quick start guide to configure the Chelsio iSCSI solution with ease.

  • Chelsio published a paper demonstrating 5M IOPS Performance with Storage Spaces Direct. This highlights how Storage Spaces Direct, combined with advanced flash-based storage connected by Chelsio’s 40GbE iWARP networking solution, helps users build faster, easy-to-scale and reliable storage for their private cloud deployments.

  • Chelsio published a Storage Spaces Direct solution brief highlighting how T5 iWARP enables streamlined, simplified configuration of high-performance RDMA networking for S2D. iWARP’s ability to work with any standard L2 switch without depending on DCB or PFC or ETS, enables an immediate plug and play deployment.

  • Chelsio published a quick start guide to configure Storage Spaces Direct using iWARP RDMA solution in under 20 minutes with any legacy switch with no special settings or uniform switch requirements in the extended datacenter.

  • Chelsio published a paper which provides details of the T6 architecture and the new features.

  • Chelsio published a paper outlining the T6’s crypto capabilities. Chelsio’s full offload TLS/SSL is uniquely capable of 100Gb line rate performance and supports all the most popular AES/SHA cipher suites and has efficient support for SMB 3.X encryption. Most importantly, T6 can deliver 100Gb of encryption capability in an amazingly low power envelope, even without considering the built-in NIC functionality.

  • Chelsio demonstrated High Performance GPU Clustering with 40GbE iWARP at NVIDIA GTC 2016. The demo provided an overview of iWARP RDMA and shows how GPU-accelerated simulation software leverage 40GbE iWARP and NVIDIA GPUDirect RDMA.

  • Chelsio presented Concurrent Support of NVMe over RDMA Fabrics and established Networked Block and File Storage at Flash Memory Summit 2016. Chelsio 10/25/40/50/100GbE Adapters provide concurrent support for NVMe-oF, SMB 3.X, NFSoRDMA, iSCSI and FCoE and deliver high Bandwidth and IOPS using NVMe backing store.
